Attorney Spotlight - Courtney Berry
Q: Let’s start off by you telling me a bit about yourself.
I’m originally from Massachusetts and have always lived in New England. Growing up I was a competitive dancer, which gave me a great outlet for my creative side. I spent my college years at University of Hartford where I received my B.S.B.A. and M.B.A. In 2022 I moved to Boston to attend New England Law Boston where I earned my J.D
Q: Why did you decide to become an attorney?
Becoming a lawyer was not a career idea for me until I had to take a business law course during my M.B.A. studies. My interests were immediately peaked, and I realized that going to law school was the right next step for me. I was inspired by the idea of using the law to problem solve and develop different ways of addressing any issue.
Q: What surprised you the most about being an attorney versus law school?
I was pleasantly surprised by the community of the legal profession. The camaraderie and support from other attorneys has been a critical step in my success. Law school can become very competitive at times, and it was refreshing to now be in an environment that encourages teamwork and collaboration.
Q: What is your favorite part of the job and working at Burns and Farrey?
The supportive environment. Everyone is incredibly helpful, approachable, and takes the time to teach me as a new attorney. The strong sense of mentorship and collaboration provides for an idea space to learn and grow. Every team member is open to answering questions, sharing insights and offering guidance when needed.
Q: Who inspires you?
My family has always inspired me and pushed me to realize my full potential. As I have entered this career, I have also found myself inspired by other attorneys who are dedicated to their work, have a great deal of integrity, and are willing to aid in the newer attorney’s success.
Q: What passions do you have outside of your career?
I enjoy staying active, going on walks and to workout classes. Being a competitive dancer growing up, I have enjoyed being able to give back to that community by working as a backstage manager at a dance competition when I can. I also love to cook and bake as a way of relaxing.
Q: What advice would you give to new attorneys?
Never be afraid to ask. It is always better to admit when you do not know something and ask for help then to sit and struggle with it alone. Entering a firm as a new attorney can be incredibly overwhelming and intimidating, but getting comfortable asking questions will help give you the confidence to better advocate for your clients and grow into a better attorney overall. Remember that you are smart and capable enough to be here, and we are all always learning.
